What’s in the Box?

The Oral-B Black 7000 SmartSeries Rechargeable Toothbrush retails for $199.00. I was able to pick up the brush on sale for $159.20. I was also surprised (and happy) to learn that, in Pennsylvania toothbrushes are non-taxable items!

This brush comes in beautiful packaging and with many accessories. From a design and quality standpoint, Oral-B sets the bar high. I felt like I was opening up a new, high-end smartphone rather than a toothbrush. This toothbrush includes:

  • Oral-B 7000 SmartSeries Brush (with Bluetooth)
  • Three different brush heads
  • Charging stand
  • Brush head refill stand
  • Hard travel case
  • Soft accessories pouch
  • Battery-powered, digital brushing timer (includes adhesive mounting bracket for your bathroom mirror)

Looks, bells and whistles aren’t everything; it’s all about results. Let’s see how well the brush performed.

Performance
The real draw of this brush is its ability to communicate brushing data to the free Oral-B app. I felt that a week would provide enough brushing time to provide a solid assessment. All in all, I logged 14 brushing sessions over the course of the seven days.

The brush felt good in my hand. Surprisingly, I found it easier to concentrate on getting good coverage for each tooth with the brush doing the majority of the work.

If you’re coming from a manual brushing experience, there will be a bit of a learning curve to using an electric brush. It took about three days to get the hang of letting the brush do the work. Instinctively, I started off using the Oral-B 7000 like a manual which resulted in too much pressure. The brush tells you this via a red LED located in the brush’s body.

Benefits

  • The brush notifies you with a simultaneous flashing LED and a handle vibration when to move to the next quadrant of your mouth. The four-section approach makes it easier to concentrate on complete brushing coverage. For instance, I found that my coverage at the gum line — especially on the inner surfaces — was better compared to the manual brush experience. My teeth felt cleaner.
  • Battery life was long, and power was consistent during brushing.
  • There’s something about knowing that your home care data is being logged that helps to ensure you don’t slack off. Truly, it kept me accountable
  • Using a timer while brushing taught me that two minutes of brush time is a lot longer than I
    thought (especially in the morning).
  • If the app is not open and linked to your phone via Bluetooth, the brush stores the data and syncs with the app the next time a connection is established.

Drawbacks

  • If the app is not open while you are brushing, you’re unable to log flossing, tongue cleaning, mouthwash and rinse data later.
  • The brush is a bit noisy.
  • I wish the Oral-B 7000 came with an extra soft brush head.

The Takeaway

My teeth are usually sensitive, and I was surprised to notice that after just a week of use with this brush, my teeth seemed to feel better.

I have mixed feelings about the Oral B app. On the positive side, there’s absolutely no doubt that I did a better job of keeping a regular brushing schedule. I made a point to ensure each part of my routine was completed each day due to my activity being logged. During the week-long trial, I did not miss a single session.

The type of data points the app can log is too limited in my opinion. Without data specifically relating to brushing technique, such as brush head location while cleaning individual teeth and the angle of the brush in respect to the gum line, suggestions for improvement are also limited.

In being able to reveal more about the way a person is brushing, dental professionals will be more equipped to offer patient-specific recommendations for improved home care quality.

If you don’t want to shell out the money for a Bluetooth enabled brush, I challenge you to use a timer the next time you brush to make certain you’re getting the full two minutes of recommended brush time. The value of the timer, although low-tech, is perhaps the biggest takeaway from this product review. The ADA recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day.

Overall, I think this brush produces better results compared to a manual brush. And, despite having a money-back guarantee from Oral-B, I will continue to use this brush.
